Regional differences in hourly rainfall characteristics over the southeastern extension of the Tibetan Plateau

نویسندگان

چکیده

The southeastern extension of the Tibetan Plateau (SETP) is distributed by typical longitudinal mountains and has unique climate characteristics significant regional differences. diurnal cycles rainfall amount, frequency, intensity over SETP in warm seasons (May–September) were investigated using high-density hourly station data possible mechanisms discussed analysing ERA5 reanalysis satellite data. largest amounts appeared on southern western margins SETP, amount was relatively small at higher elevations SETP. Located adjacent (Reg_W) eastern (Reg_E) regions presented a similar intensity, but features two quite different. had dominant peaks late afternoon Reg_W, while early morning Reg_E. A secondary peak can be found Reg_W. closely related with low-level atmospheric conditions distribution clouds. enhanced convergence anomalous southerly winds sufficient water vapour after midnight contributed to nocturnal edge In afternoon, lower surface air temperature more stable stratification Reg_E, as compared unfavourable for occurrence convection.

Summer rainfall over the southwestern Tibetan Plateau controlled by deep convection over the Indian subcontinent.

Despite the importance of precipitation and moisture transport over the Tibetan Plateau for glacier mass balance, river runoff and local ecology, changes in these quantities remain highly uncertain and poorly understood. Here we use observational data and model simulations to explore the close relationship between summer rainfall variability over the southwestern Tibetan Plateau (SWTP) and that...

Paleoglaciation of Shaluli Shan, southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Reconstructing the paleoglaciation of the Tibetan Plateau is critical to understanding linkages between regional climate changes and global climate changes, and herewe focus on the glacial history of the Shaluli Shan, an area of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau that receives much of its precipitation from monsoon flow. Based on field investigation, geomorphological mapping, and 10Be exposure da...

Dynamical influence of the Tibetan Plateau on the winter monsoon over southeastern Asia

[1] Previous studies have shown (1) that the Tibetan Plateau produces a significant fraction of the two components of the Equatorial Mountain Torque (EMT) in winter, (2) that these torques are in part related to the East Asian cold surges, and (3) that the cold surges affect the convection over the maritime continent. We show here that these relations are strong enough for the convection over t...

Elevation Pattern in Growth Coherency on the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

It is generally expected that inter-annual changes in radial growth among trees would be similar to the increase in altitude due to the limitation of increasingly harsher climatic factors. Here, we examine whether this pattern exists in alpine forests on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Increment cores were collected from mature trees at the lower, middle and upper limits of balfour spruce (Pi...
